School Supply Give-Away in Haiti

Dropout rates for primary students are high in Haiti. According to some estimates, more than half of Haiti’s urban primary-school students dropped out before completing the six year primary cycle. In rural areas, the dropout rate is 80 percent. In addition, dropout and repetition rates in rural areas are so high that three of every five primary-school students were in either first or second grade.

One of the issues affecting student enrollment is having school supplies. Without basic school supplies, it is almost impossible for teaching and learning to take place.  To help alleviate the problem, The New Orleans Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, i partnership with Children of Haiti Enhancement Foundation (COHEF), is pleased to be able to provide school supplies, backpacks and other needed support to 718 school-aged children in five schools in the rural Kenskoff area of Haiti.  The supplies were delivered at the beginning of the New Year to the children, who were excited to have such “gifts” as they worked in school.

The New Orleans Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is committed to this initiative and providing necessary supplies to help the children succeed in school. The chapter is also committed in assisting families, by providing resources identified by COHEF, to create an environment that supports and encourages student success.
